Adobe MAX Sneaks: Shaper Tool demo'd on Surface Pro 3

One of the most entertaining sessions during Adobe MAX is the annual sneak peek at technology that is still in the experimental stages. Many of these technologies will never make it into commercial products, but others may be just around the corner.

Adobe Illustrator Principal Product Manager Anubhav Rohatgi trotted out a Surface Pro 3 for his demonstration of the Shaper Tool, a technology we hope makes its way to market very soon. The interface being demonstrated is the new Touch Workspace just released in the Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 for Windows October update.

The goal of the Shaper developers is to replace up to 15 traditional tools and guides with one highly interactive tool.

Although it wasn't Surface Pro 3 specific, another sneak that the crowd also loved was Project Para, an open source tool developed by the presenter, an MIT student and Adobe intern. You can play with the software here: paradrawing.com.

Para is an experiment in using math and geometry to formulaically generate gorgeous art, without having to actually do the math and geometry. Note: This is an early look at what our team is working on in our labs.

For much of this morning's Adobe Max keynote, it looked like all the company's innovations had been created exclusively for Apple users.

But starting with the introduction of Adobe Illustrator's Touch Workspace running on the Surface Pro 3, the presentation took a decided turn.

Out trotted Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella with Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen to discuss how the two companies have been collaborating on enriching the touch capabilities in Adobe's desktop applications.

In quick succession, the two demoed a mix of new features, beta products and a conceptual video (see below) that illustrated the story that we Surface Pro and Windows tablet users have known all along: creating is simply more natural and fluid when it is accompanied by pen and touch.

After sparking the crowd's imagination with the possibilities of touch on a full-powered pc, Nadella brought the 5,000-plus attendees to their feet with the announcement that each was going home with his or her own Surface Pro 3, including touch keyboard and a one-year membership to Office 365.

Surface's Panos Panay wrote a lengthy post about the event over at the Surface Blog.

It will be fascinating to see the effect that exposing so many creative users at once to the strengths of the Surface Pro and Windows 8. Many of these are the hardest core of Apple's devotees and will no doubt struggle with the peculiarities of the Microsoft platform.

But it's safe to say that a significant percentage of these new users will have the vision to take these creative tools to a whole new level, creating work that will doubtless inspire even more new adopters.

That's the hope at least.

Weickenmeier: Surface Pro 3 pen control panel 'a couple of weeks away'

The long-awaited Surface Pro 3 pen control panel should finally be available in a couple of weeks according to Surface Audience Marketing: Creators manager Markus Weickenmeier.

I had a chance to catch up with Markus during this week's Adobe Max and when he wasn't busy either shepherding executives to media briefings or helping new users set up their shiny new Surface Pro 3s, I pressed for an update regarding the much needed pen utility.

I was surprised to learn that the control panel will actually be a Windows Store app that will allow you to set the tip's initial activation force, edit the pen's pressure curve and map the cap button to either the desktop or Modern flavor of One Note.

The app should be available for download from the Windows Store in two weeks, but in anticipation of its release, users will first have to install a set of firmware or driver fixes coming during the next Patch Tuesday. UPDATE: That patch was actually released on Tuesday, October 7 as System Hardware Update 10/6/2014.

Unfortunately, remapping the pen's side switches won't be part of this release, but that function may be added to future app updates. As a store app, it will be easier to add future functionality, according to Weickenmeier.

I haven't been granted a look at the utility, so it remains to be seen whether it will satisfy my needs. In most software I use, I find that light strokes register too heavily, but users of Fresh Paint (for example) complain that they have to press too hard for their strokes to appear. It will be interesting to see if the IAF will have to be adjusted for different applications.

Another interesting question is whether the app will behave well with programs like Manga Studio which allow users to set their own pressure values.

Adobe Illustrator Oct. 2014 Update Introduces Touch Workspace

Just hours before the opening of the Adobe MAX 2014 conference, Adobe has unveiled major updates to most of its Creative Cloud 2014 offerings, including an important new tablet-centric workflow for the popular Adobe Illustrator.

Called Touch Workspace, the new interface will launch automatically when the keyboard is removed from your Surface Pro 3. It can also be accessed from the Workspaces menu.

As described in the Adobe blog, the Touch Workspace offers "essential tools for drawing and editing with a pen and your finger in a touch environment, including French curves that you can scale, move, and trace. At any time you can switch back to one of the “classic” Illustrator workspaces to access the full range of Illustrator tools and controls. It’s Illustrator you can take with you wherever you go."

I've only tested the software on the Surface Pro 3, but the touch workspace will work with any Windows 8.x tablet pc.

Running Windows 10 Tech Preview on the Surface Pro 3

I'm not convinced that the Windows 10 Tech Preview released yesterday will do anything to enhance my life with the various Surface Pros and multiple Windows touch capable devices I own, so I'm taking it uncharacteristically slowly.

Yesterday, I installed the bits on my secondary desktop and I'm just not feeling it. Maybe it will grow on me, but right now it feels like a big step backwards. Instead of deprecating Metro/Modern, I wanted to see the Windows 8 UI refined and enhanced so that it could better replace the traditional desktop mode.

I'm now installing the preview on my original Surface Pro 1 and will offer my thoughts within the next couple of days. I don't intend to install the operating system on any other devices until Microsoft releases Continuum, which will enable users to switch more seamlessly between desktop and tablet modes.

However, I know many of you are tempted to install Windows 10 on your shiny (almost) new Surface Pro 3s and are eager to know what to expect. Fortunately for us, the guys at Windows Phone Central have done it and posted a very nice video review of their first impressions. Enjoy!

N-Trig releases updated Wintab driver

As you might tell by the low volume of posts in recent weeks, things have been a little slow on the Windows tablet news front lately.

Thanks to reader Michael Pearman, we just learned that N-Trig has issued a new update to its Wintab driver, available here.

This driver is required for older software that does not support Windows' real-time stylus.

According to the N-Trig post accompanying the release, the September 2014 update addresses pressure issues with the following software:

• Adobe Illustrator
• Adobe CS6 After Effects
• Adobe Flash Professional CC
• Adobe Fireworks CS6
• Autodesk Maya Entertainment Creation
• Autodesk Mudbox
• Softonic PaintTool SAI 

I'm downloading it now and will update the "Surface Pro 3: What Runs, What Doesn't" feature accordingly. N-Trig has published its own extensive list of compatible software here. If you have a chance to test the driver with older software, please let us know your findings in the comments section below.

UPDATE: Sad to say, the new driver doesn't appear to help the performance of Illustrator CS6 or CC on my Surface Pro 3. The software still misses about every fourth pen stroke. Let me know if your performance varies.
